FREE PATTERN: Thirst Trap Bottle Bag

Updated: Apr 9

I am SO excited to share my first free crochet pattern with all of you! The Thirst Trap Bottle Bag is probably the handmade item I use most... I carry it with me everywhere! I don't know about you, but I absolutely hate that feeling when I want a drink of water but have nothing nearby to drink. And let's be honest... carrying water also helps me make better drinking choices- if I have the water with me already, I'm not as likely to grab something else that isn't so good for me. Now I can easily carry my 40 oz. water bottle with me everywhere I go!

This pattern is a very quick make (it only takes a few hours!), and uses less than one skein of Lion Brand Heartland Yarn. This is an advanced-beginner-level crochet pattern, but I think with a little trial-and-error a brand new beginner could make it without much trouble.

If you'd like to download a formatted and printer-friendly copy of the Thirst Trap Bottle Bag, it is available for purchase on our website, Ravelry, and Etsy.

This pattern is also available as a kit from Lion Brand yarn, which includes the pattern and yarn! The kit is called the Bergen Bottle Cozy at Lion Brand because we had to make the name a little less saucy for their website ;) .

So, without further ado, here are the instructions to make your very own Thirst Trap Bottle Bag!

Materials

- 1 skein of Lion Brand Yarn Heartland in the color Congaree or approx. 160 yards of worsted yarn.

- Measuring Tape

- Scissors

Finished Size

Width of base: 3.5 in. (9 cm)

Circumference of bag: 11.5 in. (29 cm)

Height of bag: 9 in. (23 cm)

Total length w/ strap: 31 in. (79 cm)

Gauge

8 stitches + 9 rows

= 2 in. (5 cm) in single crochet

Abbreviations ch: chain dc: double crochet hdc: half double crochet rnd(s): round(s) sc: single crochet sk: skip sl st: slip stitch st(s): stitch(es)

Notes

- Designed to fit a 40 oz. Hydroflask water bottle. It will fit many other sizes/brands of water bottle, but will have the closest fit to the bottle it was designed around.

- Beginning chain of each round/row does not count as a stitch throughout pattern.

- For rounds 1-38 of the bottle bag, the pattern is worked in the round with no turning.

- When sc/dc columns are referenced in the shoulder strap section of the pattern, this refers to the column of sc and dc stitches that occur on two sides of the bottle bag in vertical columns. Attaching the should strap in these places provides additional stability for the strap of the bag.

- The shoulder strap can be made shorter or longer, but if you choose to make adjustments to the length of your shoulder strap keep in mind that the strap will have some vertical stretch when worn due to the weight of the bottle.

Rnd 38: Ch 1. Sc in every st. Sl st to first st to join. Cut yarn and weave in yarn tail.

SHOULDER STRAP

Attach yarn for row 1 at the top of one of the two sc/dc columns (7 sts wide) on the side of the bottle bag.

Row 1: Ch 2. Hdc 7. Ch 2 and turn.

Row 2: Hdc 7. Ch 2 and turn.

Repeat row 2 until the shoulder strap is approximately 26 in. (66 cm) long. Cut yarn leaving a long tail. With your tapestry needle, use the long yarn tail to seam the end of the strap to the top of the other sc/dc column on the bottle bag, doing your best to line up the 7 sts of the strap to the 7 sts of the sc/dc column. Weave in all loose ends and remove excess yarn.

Now add your favorite 40 oz. water bottle to the bag, and hydrate all day with your Thirst Trap Bottle Bag!
